Pilgrim 400 Apple Trees

You may remember that our Tree Wardens planted two Pilgrim 400 apple trees in Festival Gardens. The trees were grown to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower sailing and were planted in Festival Gardens on 4 April 2021.

Unfortunately, the trees were then vandalised and were ripped from the ground and thrown into the shrubbery. The tree warden that discovered them took them home and potted them up to grow them on in the safety of a garden. The Tree Wardens were determined that they should survive as they represented an important milestone in our Town’s history.

We are pleased to report that the trees have thrived and have now found a new home in Great Burstead church grounds. Funding for the tress was provided by the Town Council and a commemoration plaque has now been installed near the trees in the church grounds.
